My First Year Teaching Summer School

As most of you know who follow me on social media, I have been teaching summer school for the first time this year.  I have been a teacher for 10 ½ years and I have NEVER taught summer school.  I have never wanted to and my hubby has always told me that it’s not worth it.  But we are trying to save money to go to Disney World next summer so in order for me to help out, I decided to teach summer school this year.

I surprisingly really enjoyed it!!  I am taught the incoming 6th graders to Franklin MIddle School and my class was Technology Assisted Academics.  It was so much fun teaching these still 5th graders some of what they will be doing in 6th grade in the fall.  There were some really nice kids in my classes and I was excited to get to know them before the school year starts.  It almost makes me what to go back into the classroom full time!  Almost!  HA HA!

It has been a lot of fun to create lessons and projects for the kids that allows them to explore the technology they will be using in the fall.   We’ve researched debate topics, researched and created travel brochures for dangerous areas of travel, created our own business plans, and filmed videos advertising why students should come to Franklin Middle School.

It has been a lot of fun seeing these kids work so hard on their projects and really want to do a nice job on them.  It was surprising because they are not being graded on these projects and I’m really not forcing them to do the projects like I would if this were during the regular school year.  It’s hard to motivate kids during the school year when they are being graded so this was very refreshing to see.

As much as I didn’t want to teach some days since it’s summer, I found that working with these kids really brought me back to the real reason that I became a teacher.  I loved being able to teach the kids what they needed to know to be able to complete the project and then let them work.  Watching them and guiding them through their work was so rewarding to me.  It made it worth the early morning wake up calls to see them excited about the projects we were working on.

Here’s a few pics of the kids hard at work.

I was kinda sad to be done teaching after 4 weeks with these kids.  But I am glad to be able to spend more time with my two kiddos at home. I hope the kids enjoyed it as much as I did.  Hopefully, I’ll get some hugs from these guys when school starts in the fall!!!

On the last day we had a fun day filled with games, popcorn and a dodgeball tournament!  So much fun!!

I have truly enjoyed teaching summer school and as scary as it sounds, I actually hope to be able to teach it again!  I like the routine, I like the freedom in the teaching, and I like being able to come home in the afternoon and hang out with my kiddos.

All I know for sure is that the rest of this summer is going to be filled with swim lessons, fun and organizing the garage and attic and all those projects.  Next summer is Disney and I can’t wait!!  After that, you’ll just have to wait and see!!

Until next time!

When Life Throws You Lemons--My Comeback

I know I haven't’ been the best blogger as of late.  Honestly, I haven’t felt like sharing much of what I’ve been going through the past year.  Maybe I felt ashamed for struggling so much and wanted to continue to give off the persona that everything was perfect.  I’m not perfect. Far from it. But that’s what makes me real and human. I think that’s what people want to see and read about.  Not everyone is a fitness model or perfect wife and mother. So here it is! My comeback to blogging. It’s going to be real and raw and everything I’ve kept inside.   Last year when we returned from our Disney vacation (June 2017), I started back into training for my 3rd Madison Marathon.  I wanted a PR so badly for this race. I wanted so badly to be under 5 hours. My training sucked! With EJ starting peewee football and my class load at work (I’ll get into that later), every time I thought about this race, I dreaded it.  Honestly, I was falling more and mo...

Spring Break Fun!!!

Spring Break was sure fun and interesting!!  Carpet cleaning, a trip to Ikea, egg coloring, Easter Egg Scramble, and all the fun of Easter morning have made this a memorable spring break for sure. I have truly loved being home with my kiddos but there were times, especially Sunday afternoon after too much Easter candy, that I was definitely ready to head back to work and for them to head back to school. Monday was the only day my hubby had to work as he took vacation the rest of the week.  So the kids and I did some random stuff around the house and ran some errands.  Maddie went to Menards to pick out paint for her desk so she could paint it with Poppa.  While they were doing that, I took EJ to get his haircut and then to Shopko to get some totes for under the bed storage, the kids’ projects and their photo albums.  I have recently switched from using photo albums to using photo boxes.  You can fit in so many more photos and still have the ability to wr...

2 Weeks of March Reflections

Well it’s been an interesting start to March.  I apologize for no blog last week.  It was a stressful week for me and didn’t have anything positive to say so I knew that would be reflected in my blog.  And that’s not how I want my blog to come across.   So let me recap what happened that first week of March.  The week started out just fine until I decided to check on the status of my license renewal through DPI.  Because I have 2 licenses; one as a teacher and one as a reading specialist, I had to renew both of them.  Well my teaching license is fine and will most likely be approved and renewed based on my teaching experience and my PDP (professional development plan).  My reading specialist license is another story.  It is not being approved right now as I didn’t complete the correct PDP as DPI classifies reading specialist as an administrative license.  I knew this, I just didn’t realize that my PDP would be any different.  I ...
